Volunteer at AYW

If you're looking for somewhere to volunteer this fall, please consider AYW. This is my full-time job, but it can also be a great ministry opportunity. You will have the opportunity to build relationships with immigrants in south Austin and help them in their pursuit of English, a better education, and a better life for their families. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Option 1:

Volunteer Monday and/or Wednesday evening for a “conversation hour” from 7:30pm-8:30pm. During this hour, you will practice Spanish (if you want) for half an hour and then help others practice English for half an hour. It is a language exchange time, for native Spanish-speakers and native English-speakers to help each other out. This option allows, but does not require a weekly commitment. You can come for one night only, or attend as often as you choose. All that we ask is that you notify us of when you plan to come so that we can make you aware of any possible changes in the schedule.

Option 2:

Volunteer to teach a class every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, OR Thursday evening from 5:30-8:30. Lesson Plans will be provided. As a volunteer teacher, you will facilitate learning activities rather than give direct instruction. No previous teaching experience is required. BA required. Training provided.

This option requires a weekly commitment for approximately 8 weeks, depending on the length of the class session.

Dates for the 2009-2010 school year:

August 31^st – October 22^nd

October 26^th – December 17^th

January 11^th – March 4^th

March 22^nd – May 13^th

May 17^th – July 1^st

Option 3:

Volunteer sporadically to be a substitute teacher, which would include the responsibilities of option 2. Subs are needed only when a regular teacher and/or volunteer cannot teach their regular class due to illness, professional development meeting, or personal issues.

Option 4:

Childcare and tutors are needed during our evening classes. Volunteer one night a week for an 8 week session, or for an entire semester or school year. Volunteers will play with young children and help school age children with their homework. Background check required.
