bananas out the wazoo

as this last semester was coming to a close, camille and i decided it was time to give a gift to the women of Pancho Mateo who have fed us so well over the past 5 months. knowing we'd still be able to get fresh bananas, we chose to introduce them to the world of banana bread. our last full weekend in the DR was the same as the weekend we spent at the beach with the pastor's from the Austin Stone. we ended that trip with a night at Ruben's farm, and then one of his friends drove us back to Puerto Plata.

so as we were heading down the mountain road from Santiago, we told our driver that we wanted to stop and get some fresh fruit along the way. we asked him to go and get them for us, knowing he would certainly get the dominican (and lower) price. we gave him 60 pesos and asked for 2 avocados and as many bananas as that would buy.

he came back to the car with 2 avocados, 14 banans, 30 pesos, and news that we could get twice as much if we wanted it. well, we did want to make a LOT of banana bread, so why not?

our total purchases go something like this:

3 avocado: 10 pesos each
21 bananas: 30 pesos TOTAL

the current peso/dollar ratio was 32/1. so we spent 60 pesos, which is $1.88.

yes, that's right. we bought THREE avocado and TWENTY ONE bananas for a buck 88.
