jesus feeds the 5000

ok, so there weren't quite 5000 people there, but there were a lot. a whole village, in fact.
back in august, as camille and i (and sharla and kate) were organizing the MAK house, we quickly realized that we had a lot of donated clothing. and i don't just mean a few bags of shirts here and there. i'm talking bags and suitcases by the carload. 2 carloads to be exact.
so we found two responsible women in chichigua and put them in charge of selling the clothing at a decent price. we thought we were going to have a market day one weekend and be done with it. but oh, no. these two women, maria and alamen, became real business women, and over the course of about 6 weeks raised over $200. in addition to giving them a little of their profits for their hard work, we also rewarded the whole village of chichigua with a huge party.
with the money they raised, we bought rice, beans, chicken, salad and platanos to feed, literally, the whole village. i'm not sure exactly how many people live in chichigua, but it's way more than $200 worth of food would feed in the US. the women helped us cook (or i should say, we helped them cook) in big pots over wood fires. i peeled so many platanos that my hands were black for days.
there was also a presentation of some of our students and jim white came to give an evangelistic message in haitian kreyol. everyone had a grand ol' time.
