la vida en el caribe

earlier this week we began orientation. "we" includes Sharla (ex. dir.), Kate (board member), Jennie (who has lived here many years, but is just now coming on board with makarios), and the newbies, Camille and me.
there's really no better place to have such a thing as orientation than in the caribbean. on friday, we decided to take our business to the beach. we loaded ian, complete with swim trunks and lots of nutritious food, into the makarios pathfinder and were off to Cabarete, about 45 minutes down the coast from puerto plata. after hitting the german bakery (run by a german man and his dominican wife) and soaking up the sun, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner on the beach (pictured here). there's really nothing to compare to watching the sunset and listening to waves crash while you discuss business. saturday morning, after returning the the german bakery for cafe con leche and breakfast, we continued with our business, again listening to the crashing waves, and occasionally being interrupted by people wondering why 4 gringas have a haitian baby. on the drive back we stopped at one of the many roadside fruit stands to pick up a variety of "exotic" fruits. we hope to use these for some very yummy smoothies in the near future.
