the river walk
mid december last year began a tradition with our career class of taking a trip to San Antonio to go to the river walk as a sort of christmas celebration. i received the evite and heard about the fun times that were had, but quite sad that i was unable go to. the travel time for me was just a little too much.thankfully the tradition continued this year. about 25 of us met up yesterday at 2:30, and shortly after 3:00 we were on our way. i happened to choose the vehicle in which christmas music wasn't allowed, but that unfortunate circumstance was balanced out by the good company.
we arrived in San Antonio to find that it was, in fact, just as cold there as in Austin. after visiting the alamo, wandering around the river walk, and enjoying some fancy queso and tex-mex, we made our way to the boat tour. i was very thankful that all the joking did not actually result in anyone ending up IN the river. we saw lots of pretty lights, learned new things about San Antonio, and heather and i were almost reprimanded for holding a side conversation.
we then quickly (or not so quickly) made our way to starbucks so we could warm our insides. and though i would rather not drink corporate coffee, i must say that this was the fanciest starbucks i have ever seen - complete with a plethora of music stations and a second floor. unfortunately our group didn't quite understand that the warmth inside starbucks was quite nice, so we proceeded to stand in the cold while drinking our caffeinated goodness.
the evening ended with enjoyable car ride conversations among the same delightful company with which it began. we returned to austin at a not completely unreasonable hour, and i was just content - and cold - enough to truly value the comfort - and warmth - of my bed.
there are some people who would opt out of such a trip based on little interest in the river walk and the unfortunately low temperatures. but all it really takes is the right attitude - and the right people - to create joy and warmth out of any circumstances.

I'm glad that everyone had fun. Maybe next year I'll be able to go and won't be detained by a silly sinus infection. I'd love to see the River Walk lit up...it's nice all year round but I'm sure the lights make it even more beautiful. I'm glad the trip went well. Merry Christmas!
