which culture do i chose?
so here i sit.it's 1:32 pm.
5th period on tuesday.
that's means i have no students for another 28 minutes.
and how do i chose to spend that time?
have i chosen to grade the papers turned in to me last week? have i chosen to continue planning my lesson on St. Patrick (if you have ideas, sendd 'em my way)?
no, i have not.
i have chosen to sit here sucking on a leftover valentine sucker and blogging.
but i'm not being completely useless. i've been contemplating my options for how to spend the next year of my life, both of which (assuming either one is a true possibility) are huge cultural experiences.
option #1: stay where i am. that means continuing to teach ESL to junior high and high school students and writing to 7th graders. that also means continuing to deal with the Turkish administration at this wacky school. thus far this experiences has been excruciating and not so bad, all at the same time. the excruciating part has been resolved, and now i've moved on to dealing with what will forever remain the cultural differences God has created in this beautiful world. so thought it's not easy (what is?), it's not too bad.
option #2: go teach in India for a year - an opportunity a friend of mine told me about a few weeks ago to teach at the Asian Christian Academy of India. great opportunity to learn about another culture while living in it, and at the same time still getting teaching experience. it's only a year committment, so if i freak while i'm there, i'll be back to my own ways soon enough.
there are many pros and cons for both of these option. making that list isn't the hard part. the hard part is knowing which column God would put everything in...and then knowing which column should carry more weight.
either way i'm going to be dealing with cultural issues for the rest of my career. it comes with the ESL territory. the question is, which culture do i chose?
