God of Peace
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. ~Paul, in his letter to the Philippians
Steven Curtis Chapman - Miracle Of The Moment
From the album The Moment
It's time for letting go
All of our if onlys
Cause we don't have a time machine
And even if we did
Would we really want to use it?
Would we really want to go change everything?
Cause we are who and where and what we are for now
And this is the only moment we can do anything about
Chorus:
So breathe it in and breathe it out
Listen to your heartbeat
There's a wonder in the here and now
It's right there in front of you
And I don't want you to miss
The miracle of the moment
There's only one who knows
What's really out there waiting
In all the moments yet to be
And all we need to know
Is He's out there waiting
To Him the future's history
And He has given us a treasure called right now
And this is the only moment we can do anything about
And if it brings you tears
Then taste them as they fall
And let them soften your heart
And if it brings you laughter
Then throw your head back
And let it go, let it go
You gotta let it go
Listen to your heartbeat

a night of nostalgia
i went to college station on saturday night for the first time in over 4 years. a few friends of mine and i were headed to a swing dance and since none of them had ever been to college station, we took some extra time to eat at a local restaurant and take a mini tour of the campus. as we walked up to La Bodega, i was quickly reminded how casual CS is, as my friends and i were dressed up for the dance, and everyone around us was in shorts and a tshirt.it was a little strange being on campus as a former student. with every turn i had memories of different things that had happened in that very spot, and while it seemed like so long ago, i couldn't believe it had been over 4 years (up to 8 years for some of those memories!).
i had also heard about some changes in the MSC and sure enough, it's been upgraded. there is now carpet in the hallway, and for anyone who ever enjoyed seeing the senior corp members slide up to the elevators, this is a huge disappointment. though the flag room looks much better with all new furniture, lamps and wifi, the new ivy league look doesn't give it quite the same relaxed feel that defines TAMU.
overall i had a wonderful time visiting my alma-mater. i'll have to go back in the daylight next time...hopefully to join the aggie's in their playful banter at a baseball game.

claimed
the post that used to be here is no longer applicable. the table has been claimed.so in other news, today is diesisies. for you non-spanish speakers, that means sixteen. as in September 16th. a few friends of mine and i were having dinner last night, and when i mentioned that i had today off for diesisies, they asked me what that was. another friend said it's Mexico's independence. but i thought that was Cinco de Mayo. so, said friend decided to do some research, and this is what she found:

mi segunda lengua
so i finally had an LPAC meeting today (one of those teacher meetings for kids who speak a language other than English). we have to have a parent on the committee, and i was finally able to rope one in. but, like most parents who have kids in an ESL program, this father doesn't speak English. so this was my first opportunity to see how much i really learned this past year.i am proud to say that i actually gave the training and led the meeting all in Spanish, and this father actually seemed to understand what was going on. i couldn't tell if he was offended by complete lack of ability to remember to use the usted (formal) form, but i think i was ok.
and on the topic of LPAC and work - i am now able to meet my first TEA deadline, assuming my students can remember to have their parents sign a piece of paper and bring it back on Tuesday - all over a 3 day weekend...

haiti
please don't forget to keep up with the MAKARiOS blog. you for sure don't want to miss this post.for those who have been asking about the situation in haiti, this is a very well written eye witness view. don't expect historical facts. just honest feelings about the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
p.s. phillip is writing a book, so if while reading this you think, "man, he should write a book," well, he is.
tengo frio!
ok, i know everyone is going to think this is ridiculous, but i'm seriously cold here in texas.i've had to turn the heat on in my car for 2 days in a row now. granted it's low heat, but it's still heat.
in august.
ridiculous.

learning to trust
i went rock climbing yesterday morning. it was the first time in over a year and it felt great. it was a beautiful day, no rain, and enough cloud cover to keep our eyes shaded.one of the biggest problems i have with rock climbing is trusting my feet. i have to trust my feet or i'm not gonna go anywhere on that rock except down. and though i have some very patient belay friends, going down just isn't a good feeling when you should be going up.
but the more i climb, the more i use my feet, the more i learn the trust them, the higher i get and the quicker i get there. all i have to do is plant my feet firmly on the rock and trust. that's the way to the top.
i just happen to be one of those people who likes to be in control of everything in my life. i want to know what's gonna happen and when it's gonna happen BEFORE it happens. and if i don't know, i get a little anxious and flat out stressed out.
and then i spent a year in the dominican republic, where nothing is predictable. i spent a year learning to trust God to teach me the language. i spent a year learning to trust God to provide all of my financial support. i spent a year learning to trust God to teach me about my place in His plan for the world. i spent a year learning to trust God.
and God taught me the language. He provided my financial support. He showed me what He created me for. He proved His faithfulness day after day.
and then i returned to austin with no job and plans that were more talk than reality. i spent a mere 2 weeks, two stress free weeks, getting readjusted and going to one -yes, just 1 - interview. and then for no good reason that i can think of, God gave me the almost perfect job.
did God have to give me that job? no. did i get it because i trusted Him more? maybe. does trusting God mean everything will always turn out this good? definitely not.
but as i sat in church this morning and listened to the testimony's of those throughout the room of how God had also provided for them - from a $200/mo. pay raise that exactly matches a car payment, to the long awaited completion of an MA degree, and even the simplicity of servant friends who get the job done 5X faster - i was reminded once again of God's faithfulness and how, if we will just plant out feet firmly in Him and trust, we'll make it to the top.
